SERVICEMEN OF ALSTON MOOR
OF THE TWO WORLD WARS
There are eight memorials on Alston Moor to those who fell in war, they are; the Alston War Memorial, the screen in St. Augustine’s Church, a plaque in the same church, St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Alston, Samuel King’s School in Alston, St. John’s Church, Garrigill, St. John’s Church, Nenthead, and the Nenthall War Memorial. Eighty-eight men and one woman with Alston Moor connections died in the First World War and twenty-seven men died in the Second World War.
As well as the Memorials there are Rolls of Honour in various locations that record names of those who served and survived. There are only two war graves on Alston Moor; they are in Alston cemetery, one from 1918 the other from 1946.
