Newsletter Summer 2009

A few more items that you might be interested in have arisen since the last Newsletter. It may not be possible to make announcements at the September meeting in Nenthead – hence this letter.

MEETING 2 ND SEPTEMBER

A final reminder that this meeting will be held in Nenthead Village Hall, commencing 7.15 for 7.45. This will allow time to view the exhibits and photographs supplied by Wright Bros. More details will be found on the posters being displayed around the area or in the last Newsletter. There now seems to be a doubt about the 1934 Crossley being ready in time but there will still be plenty to see.

NEW BOOKS

Two new books that may be of interest to members are in the process of being released:-

•  Peter Wilkinson's new book ‘ OLD ALSTON' is now ready and he hopes to be able to bring a supply to the September meeting in Nenthead. Members will thus have an early opportunity to purchase a copy (£12.95) and Peter will be happy to sign copies on request. There will be a formal launch at a later date to be advised.

•  Brian Edge, from Crewe and a member of our Society, has written a history of Leadgate School and is planning the launch of his book at Local Links on Saturday, 14 th September. Look out for further details on the posters to be displayed nearer the time. The book is hard backed and will cost £13.95.

As most of you know I have had continuous problems with my house. However I am pleased to say that the gremlins have now been exorcised and to mark the occasion we are holding an Open Day at Mid Ashgill Farm on Friday, 27 th August between 10.30 and 4.00 pm. Proceeds are to be shared between the League of Friends of Alston Cottage Hospital and the church of St. Augustine. All are most welcome to visit us!

Best wishes
